World Renowned Cirque du Soleil – KOOZA coming to Calgary!

September 1st, 2010 by Sarah Hope-Johnston

Hey everyone, I have got some super exciting news – in case you haven’t heard, famed Cirque du Soleil is making another appearance in Calgary this fall to the Grand Chapiteau, at Parking Lot # 6 on Stampede Park.

KOOZA is a return to the origins of Cirque du Soleil: it combines two circus traditions – acrobatic performance and the art of clowning. The show highlights the physical demands of human performance in all its splendor and fragility, presented in a colorful mélange that emphasizes bold slapstick humor.

The show will be running from September 16, 2010 until October 10,2010. This is a must see performance for any age, so be sure to purchase your tickets before your preferred show date and time sells out!

I remember in 2005 when Alegría came to town under the Grand Chapiteau (“The Big Top”) set at the Currie Barracks. It was an unforgettable evening of awe-inspiring talent; words don’t even begin to do these performers justice. While I had seen previous shows at their home theatres in Las Vegas, the Grand Chapiteau still provided the exact same feel as if you were in a home theatre. Honestly, you will not even believe that this once bare parking lot has now been transformed into a fantastic arena for the show.

Truly do not take my word for it…read some reviews, watch some of the multimedia videos on the Cirque du Soleil websites, and most importantly – book your seats now to what is sure to be one of the most exciting evenings of your entire year! (Aside from perhaps the Sunday Rodeo Finals at Stampede.)

Enjoy KOOZA !

WOW!

Our own Grandstand Show Musical Director, David Pierce, brings home the Emmy for Outstanding Musical Direction!! Dave won this incredible award, beating out his “acknowledged ‘heroes’ in the music biz” – people like Canadian Producer David Foster and Hairspray composer Marc Shaiman.  An incredible feat! Congratulations Dave!!

Best known for his fresh approach to orchestral writing, Emmy-award winner Dave Pierce is as equally comfortable conducting a 100 piece live studio orchestra as he is producing a midi-score using computers and samplers.  His sound has been described by Film Score Monthly as “son of John Williams meets Jerry Goldsmith”. Critically acclaimed across music genres, Pierce’s style spans from big band  to cinematic infused scores.

Dave Pierce wins the Emmy!!

An alumnus of Berklee College of Music (1992), Pierce regularly works in all major markets; New York, L.A., Nashville, Toronto and Vancouver.  He orchestrated music for Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Concert Tour and Jesus Christ Superstar Gospel, and has worked with legendary entertainment producers to develop many successful projects including The Calgary Stampede’s Evening Grandstand Show, Radio City Music Hall’s Christmas Spectacular featuring The Rockettes, NBC’s Macy’s Parade and many television awards shows including the ACMA’s in USA and the Gemini Awards in Canada.

In 2010, Pierce was the Music Director and Composer for the Vancouver Olympic Winter Games. His scores accompanied the Opening, Medals and Closing Ceremonies which were viewed by a television audience of 3.5 billion people.  The Olympic project entailed scoring over five hours of original music, producing sessions, developing creative concept with the ceremonies team and conducting over 500 hours of orchestra, choir and big band recordings.

Often referenced by the media as “Canada’s next David Foster”, in August 2010 Pierce won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Music Direction for the 2010 Vancouver Olympics in the same category as fellow nominee and musical inspiration David Foster. Pierce has arranged music for a multitude of artists including Bryan Adams, Carrie Underwood, Michael Bublé, Nelly Furtado, Jann Arden, Tommy Tune, Sarah McLachlan, k.d. lang, Alanis Morissette and Petula Clark. He has produced gold and platinum selling CD’s including EMI released CD’s for the Opening and Closing of the 2010 Olympic Wintergames featuring Nickelback, Avril Lavigne, Donald Sutherland, Hedley, Simple Plan, K-OS, Joni Mitchell, Measha Brueggergosman, Ben Heppner and Nikki Yanofsky.

In 2005 Pierce was commissioned to compose a new work for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, featuring a symphony orchestra and one-thousand voice choir.  Symphony Orchestras across North America regularly perform Pierce’s music.

Dream it, Believe it, Do it!

August 19th, 2010 by Kirstie Rougeau

I had always dreamed of becoming Stampede Royalty and last September I believed in myself enough and made my dream come true! It is that time of year again when the Calgary Stampede along with Katie, Janelle and I want to help make three more girl’s dreams come true. I am saddened by the thought of my year as a Stampede Princess coming to an end, but I am also so thankful and excited by what this amazing opportunity has given me.

Now that Stampede 2010 has ended I can easily recall my favorite moment; standing on stage in front of the Grandstand filled with 20,000 people welcoming everyone to The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth – what a breathtaking moment. Katie, Janelle and I were also so very lucky to travel to Vancouver to the Winter Olympics to promote our great city and this wonderful organization. There are countless events that have touched my heart, one that stands out was the day we were blessed to help a little girl fighting cancer fulfill her dream of becoming a cowgirl for the day. It is things like this that truly make being a Stampede Princess everything I wanted it to be. Lastly I cannot forget the most important thing I’ve taken away from this year, friendship. I now have a long standing relationship with the Stampede organization and all its amazing volunteers. To Katie and Janelle, you two have grown into my heart as family, you will always be two of my very best friends and for that I am so thankful for this opportunity!!

I encourage anyone thinking of running for Stampede Queen and Princesses to do what I did and believe you have what it takes to be the face of The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth. You can download an application form from our website, csqueenandprincesses.com. But hurry as the deadline to apply is August 27, 2010!

Until next time, dream big and live proud.

Princess Kirstie

Surviving post-Stampede depression…

August 18th, 2010 by Cynthia Kumar

Stampede Family and Friends…

As we all have gone our own ways back to our normal routine with the end of another Stampede, the countdown towards the 100th year centennial anniversary of the Calgary Stampede in 2012 begins.  Over the past few weeks over coffees, many of us have been sharing our experiences and noted some of which mimic the 7 Stages of getting-over-Stampede model made by a guy who supposedly only meets girls during the 10 days of Stampede…with a few Grandstand edits ;)

**Disclaimer** For anyone going through a tough time right now, I hope this brings a smile to your face and lightens the load.

Shock & Denial. You probably reacted to learning of the end of Stampede with numbed disbelief. You may have denied the reality of the loss at some level, in order to avoid the pain, attempting to recreate the Stampede experience by wearing your cowboy hat, buckle and boots to work and to bed. Shock provides emotional protection from being overwhelmed all at once. This may last for weeks.

Pain & Guilt. As the shock wears off, it is replaced with the suffering of unbelievable pain. And for some of us, the pain of hearing anything “Stampede” ringing in your ear drums all day long. Although excruciating and almost unbearable, it is important that you experience the pain fully, and not hide it, avoid it or escape from it with alcohol, drugs, or other rodeos. You may have guilty feelings or remorse over the number of mini donuts and pulled pork parfaits you ate or withdrawal from the liquid diet you managed to sustain. Maybe even the number of phone numbers saved in your phone without a name. Life feels chaotic and scary during this unbelievably calm and uneventful phase.

Anger & Bargaining. Frustration gives way to anger, and you may lash out and turn on Country 105 constantly on full blast. Or turn on bright lights and scream “A**less Chaps” in order to recreate the tent feel. Please try to control this, as permanent damage to your relationships could result. This is a time for the release of bottled up emotion. You may also try to bargain in vain with the powers that be for a way out of your despair (“I will never always remember to ask for a name with the number if you just bring Stampede back”).

Depression, loneliness, reflection. Just when your friends may think you should be getting on with your life, a long period of sad reflection will likely overtake you. This is a normal stage of getting over Stampede. During this time, you finally realize the true magnitude of the effect of Stampede upon you, and it depresses you as you reflect on things you did with during the last Stampede, and focus on memories of the past.

The upward turn….as you start to adjust to life without Stampede, your life becomes a little calmer and more organized. Your physical symptoms at the sight or smell of beef or Budweiser lessen, and your “depression” begins to lift slightly.

Reconstruction & Working through…as you become more functional, your mind starts working again, you find yourself seeking realistic solutions to problems posed by life without Stampede (sleeping primarily solves these problems). You start to work on practical issues and reconstructing yourself and your life without the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth.

Acceptance & Hope! During this, the last of the seven stages in this getting-over-Stampede model, you learn to accept and deal with the reality of your situation. Acceptance does not necessarily mean instant happiness. Given the pain and turmoil you have experienced, you can never return to the carefree, innocent YOU that existed before the whirlwind. But, I promise, you will find a way forward. You will start to look forward and actually plan for next year’s Stampede. Eventually, you will be able to think about your (first, second, twenty-fifth, fiftieth) stampede without pain. You will once again anticipate some good times to come, and yes, even find joy again in the experience of other events.

Just remember, your Stampede Family will always be here on Stampede Park with events, concerts, hockey games, special productions.. and yes the Stampede Casino all year ’round.  Before you know it (in 321 days) the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth will be back!

With love… from everyone part of bringing the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth to the Grandstand near you!

STAMPEDE 2010!

July 29th, 2010 by Sahvanne Weasel Traveller

Calgary Stampede 2010 was the most exciting time I have experienced. Nothing could have prepared me for the ten days of celebration.

I met hundreds of people at the many events I attended. The entire city of Calgary was alive with western heritage and values – The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth had finally arrived! Many visitors came to watch and participate in the parade that was the kick off to the Stampede. This year as the Indian Princess, I rode the Indian Princess horse Stormy in the parade. That was an unforgettable experience, to have a chance to wave and greet all the people of the city and world as they watched the parade.

There were many pancake breakfasts that I attended with the trio. It was wonderful to meet so many people at the many breakfasts hosted by the local corporations and businesses.

The rodeo was the one of the many great attractions for many professional cowboys and cowgirls. I was thrilled for the opportunity to ride in the rodeo grand entry. It was very exciting to see all the friendly people smiling and waving back at me.

Each evening the chuckwagon races created high energy as the crowds cheered on their favourite chuckwagon driver and outriders. I had the honour, along with the trio, to escort daily rodeo and chuckwagon winners onto the main stage for their trophies and prize money.

The most exciting event was the celebration of dances, ceremonies and tea gathering at the Indian Village. I was so proud to represent the First Nations people as I was at these Indian Village events.

I am deeply grateful to the many sponsors, chaperones, Indian Events Committee and Indian Princess Committee members that made my experience at the Stampede a memorable one.

Until next time,

Your 2010 Calgary Stampede Indian Princess

What’s Happening at Stampede Park: July 26 – August 1

July 26th, 2010 by Reginald Tiangha

Not much is happening at Stampede Park this week as cleanup and other tasks finish up now that Stampede 2010 is in the books. Many staff and volunteers are using this opportunity to take some much needed time off for themselves while others are already busy planning Stampede 2011 and beyond!

Of course, that isn’t to say that things aren’t happening elsewhere. For example, speaking of Stampede 2011, we’re running a contest on our official Facebook fan page right now where you can win a return flight for two people from WestJet that you can use on next year’s Stampede! And as always, the Stampede Casino is open year-round and always has something going on down there, including an excellent food menu.

  • “See You in 2011″ Facebook Fan Contest: Submit your best photo of Stampede 2010 and win a pair of return tickets from WestJet! Simply become a fan of our Facebook page by signing into Facebook using your account and click on the “Like” button at the top of the official Calgary Stampede Facebook page, and then navigate to this page for all the rules and details on how to enter. Up for grabs is a return flight for two people to and from any scheduled WestJet destination. Approximate retail value: $1,500. Contest ends August 16, 2010.
  • Stampede Casino: The Stampede Casino is now a part of the Stampede Family! Open all year-round and featuring all your favourite slots, tables, a 24 hour poker room, as well as fine dining and special events throughout the year, there’s always something going on down here, so why not drop by for a visit?

Ed Melville- Championship Night

July 19th, 2010 by Ed Melville

Wow, what a day Sunday turned out to be.  For me, it started off watching my good friend Neal Walgenbach sell off all his horses to other wagon drivers at an auction at his barn.  I guess it really hit home for me when I saw those horses go that Neal is actually retiring.  But I guess everything comes to an end, and ol’ Neal sure went out in style by winning the aggregrate title and making it to the $100K dash for cash.  I was really hoping he would pull it off and complete the Cinderella story, but second place behind Kelly Sutherland is still something to be proud of.  I would like to thank the Walgenbach family for allowing me to be a part of it with them.  I was pretty sad when I got off that outriding horse, knowing it was the last time I would outride for Neal.  Congratulations to Kelly Sutherland for winning his 11th Title at Calgary.  It’s amazing what he has done, and I can’t think of anybody that has been at the top of their respective sport for more than 40 years.  History was made last night; thumbs up to Kelly and his outriders.  I would also like to congratulate Devin Mitsuing for winning my grandfather’s award, The Orville Strandquist Memorial,  for the top rookie driver.  Way to go Devin, you drove like a champ!  For me, it was a great week.  I had 2 of my wagons make the final heat, but we couldn’t quite pull it off.  That’s wagon racing.  In closing, I would like to thank the Calgary Stampede for putting on such a first class event, it is the greatest Outdoor Show on Earth.  God Bless, and we hope to see you down the Chuckwagon trail

Sincerely

Ed Melville Jr.

An Introduction to Western Culture

July 19th, 2010 by Sarah Wilson

Here’s what some of the NGC hosts had to say about introducing the Western Culture to new audiences at the 2010 Calgary Stampede.

The Western Oasis in the BMO Centre was really great this year.  I really enjoyed being able to walk around and enjoy the western art with all of our guests as well as look at the unique entertainment that was showcased.  One of my favourite parts was the living statues.  A lot of people really liked looking at them from afar and then slowly getting closer and closer to them, to see when they would move and what they were going to do next. I also really enjoyed looking at the Royal Trio Alumni exhibit.  It was so interesting to see how much history the Stampede has and also how the outfits have changed over the years (for example the bright yellow pant suit from the 1970’s).  Another highlight was watching the artist build the Inuksuk’s.  Western Oasis was great as it was a chance to really interact and get to know our guests in a quiet, calm and very interesting setting.
-Andrea Miller

I really enjoyed the whole weekend so it will be hard to pick out a favorite part.  But after initially being scared to tears by the living statues in Western Oasis, the 4 year old from the Chinese community association asked “Mom, why did it move?” then wanted to go back and see it again, that was definitely up there for favorites!  Or the little boy from Vietnam who, after eating Bannock at Indian Village exclaimed “I’ve ALWAYS wanted to try Indian food!” and the lady from Eritrea who was so impressed with the vibrancy of the Native culture.  The teenage girl from Afghanistan who told me her favorite part of the tour was looking the artwork in Western Oasis.  And the father from Somalia who stopped to do his Muslim prayers next to one of the nature displays in the Western Oasis.  Those moments really stuck out for me.
- Nicole Mosher

There isn’t too much happening this week at Stampede Park as the majority of the week will be dedicated to tear-down and clean up as Stampede 2010 has come to a close.

Farm Equipment- Up Close and Personal

July 18th, 2010 by Dave Lantz

Just outside the Big Top tent, you will be able to see John Deere’s 2010 Front-wheel assist Tractor with front end loader and grapple fork that is used on many farms for handling the round bales, manure and other daily chores.

Behind that tractor is a brand new John Deere big round Baler – these bales can weigh up to 900 kg (one ton) and are used to feed livestock and horses. Farmers use this machine to bale such crops as straw and hay.

An innovative machine can also be seen by the Big Top - the John Deere Tracked Tractor which uses rubber tracks instead of tires. The benefits of this tractor are that it makes less of a footprint in the fields (between rows) and causes less compaction than most wheeled tractors.

Inside the tent you will find a vintage crop duster. This plane was used to spray the crops in order to prevent disease and control pests which may adversely affect yield. This plane is provided by the Aerospace Museum of Calgary. Also at this display you can find video and information from the Alberta Aerial Applicators Association.

Also in the tent at the International Agriculture booth you can see a vintage horse drawn rig, provided by Will Irvine. This would have been used by past generations to transport people and supplies before the advent of the automobile. Come check them out!

Ed Melville- Night 9

July 18th, 2010 by Ed Melville

Well, the final 4 are decided.  After 8 hard days of racing and 1 rainout, Neal Walgenbach; the Sutherland brothers, Kirk and Kelly; and Jason Glass, are in the final dash tonight.  I think it is going to come down to a barrel draw because all 4 outfits are pretty evenly matched.  Personally, I have 2 wagons in the final 4: Neal Walgenbach and Kirk Sutherland.  I will ride for Neal Walgenbach tonight, and it will be sad as it is for the last time.  However, win, lose or draw, I am proud to say that I have been with him all these years, and it is an honor to be with him in his final race.  It has been fun all week hanging out with our American steer wrestling friends Stockton Graves, Dean Gorsuch, Wade Sumpter, Gabe LeDoux, and Todd Suhn.  They all like to come over to the barns at night and have a beer with us.  They are selling Neal Walgenbach’s horses this morning at 11 - it will be a sad day I am sure.  These horses are like family, and when they leave, I imagine it will be like a kid going off to college. Like something is missing.  Congratulations to Dustin Gorst on being named the Top Outrider at this year’s Stampede.  For him to fight back from 2 broken legs last year shows his true heart and character.  That was well deserved.  Anyway, tonight is a big night, stay tuned!
