It is hard to believe that the third month of our reign is about to come to an end. I have a feeling that this year is going to fly by faster than we ever imagined. In December we had the privilege of being part of two “Happy Trails” events where we visited seniors centers and throughly enjoyed singing and line dancing along side Harry the Horse. We attended Christmas parties for the Downtown Attractions and Caravan Committees and met more people who are involved with the Stampede. I am truly amazed to see how many wonderful individuals dedicate their time to this organization.

My favorite event in December was when we went out to the school that I was completing my practicum at. I was proud to introduce Katie, Kirstie and Sahvanne to the students and staff that I had been working with for four months. We judged the lip sync competition and watched the cheerleading team I am coaching, perform for the very first time. We have really enjoyed ourselves so far and we are looking forward to an amazing 2010.

The finals of the Mac’s Midget Hockey Tournament and the Calgary Flames’ Danone SuperSkills competition highlight the week ahead, along with plenty of Flames and Hitmen regular season action.

This week, it may look like there isn’t much to do around Park, but rest assured that despite it being the holiday season, lots of things are happening behind the scenes in preparation for all the cool things to come in the new year, including the greatest event of all, Stampede 2010!

With only about a week and a half to go until Christmas, things are definitely slowing down here on Park. However, what better way to celebrate Winter and the (rapidly!) approaching holidays than with the Canadian tradition of Hockey? As Reg wrote a Holiday poem for last week’s edition of What’s Happening to the theme of ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas, I thought I’d take a stab at it too, this time, to the theme of Let it Snow! Here goes:

Oh the weather outside is frightful,
but the Hockey’s so delightful!
There’s simply no place to go,
but the ‘dome, but the ‘dome, but the ‘dome!

As you can see, this week is all about hockey as the Hitmen and the Flames each host a couple of games at the Saddledome. Do you think we’ll see another amazing save like the one Kipper had the other day against Nichol? Here’s hoping!

Wow! What a weekend!

We kicked off our Grey Cup weekend with a visit from “Tuffy” a 30-year-old horse that walked into the lobby of the Ramada Hotel. Interesting visitors and fantastic events were definitely a theme for this wonderful weekend in Calgary. We had great weather and thoroughly enjoyed meeting people from all across Canada.

Grey Cup weekend was also called “The Royalty Practicum” because it gave us a glimpse at what life would be like during Stampede. I have one word to describe it, crazy! We were up at 5am and crashed at 12:30am almost everyday.

Each day began with a pancake and sausage breakfast hosted by the Grey Cup Committee. We learned how to properly flip pancakes and practiced our touchdown dances with the committee mascot, Charlie the Horse. The rest of the day was spent jumping from event to event and party to party. I really enjoyed taking part in the parade on Saturday afternoon. It was great to see so many people out on the streets celebrating Canada’s Game.
