Hippy…I mean Happy Trails!

March 10th, 2010 by Janelle Phillips

I hope everyone is enjoying the wonderful weather. March has been fantastic so far! Our schedule has been light the past couple of weeks with only the Tarp Auction on March 4th. Katie and Kirstie have finally had the chance to catch up on their school work and the break has allowed me to accept quite a few substitute teaching jobs. Next week we will jump right back into action with Aggie Days. Come on down to the Stampede grounds from March 17th – 21st to join us!

Every month we attend “Happy Trails” events with the Promotions committee. For these events we visit seniors homes and spend the evening singing and line dancing with the residents. We love these events because the people are always happy to visit with us and we can practice our dancing skills. At our last “Happy Trails” event we debuted our newest shirts, the tie-dye! These are definitely the brightest articles of clothing in our closets and the residents absolutely loved them.

Watch out Calgary, you won’t be able to miss us now!

A Worldly Atmosphere

February 21st, 2010 by Janelle Phillips

We have just returned home from our trip to the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games. I have one word to describe our experience…..UNFORGETTABLE!!!! In three days we had the opportunity to visit the Canada Pavilion, enjoy Alberta beef at the Alberta House, ride the Travel Alberta train, tour Olympic Village in Whistler, attend the Medal Ceremonies in B.C. Place and wander around downtown Vancouver to soak up the exhilarating atmosphere. The trip flew by but it left us with many amazing memories.

Besides riding the Alberta Train, which I think was a highlight for all of us girls, my favorite part of the experience was the feeling of pride that filled Vancouver. We were in the Canada Pavilion when Maelle Ricker won Canada’s second gold medal and the place erupted with cheering and excitement. Everywhere we went people were chanting “Go Canada Go” and wearing our national colors with pride. Robson Square was alive with enthusiasm at all hours. It was like being back on the Red Mile when the Flames were in the Stanley Cup Finals, this time on a world scale. People from all over the world have come to celebrate their athletes and Vancouver gave them a thrilling welcome.

Our trip to the Olympics is now the highlight of my year so far. Thanks Vancouver.

Congratulations to all of our talented athletes, we are so proud of you.

Reach for the stars!

Off to Vancouver!

February 15th, 2010 by Janelle Phillips

Olympic Spirit

The wait is finally over and we are heading to Vancouver tomorrow morning! The world has gathered on Canada’s West coast to celebrate our elite athletes and I am looking forward to being at the heart of the excitement. The next three days will be packed with events  and I am ready to hit the streets of Vancouver with my umbrella in hand. Wednesday is Alberta Day and we will be aboard the Travel Alberta train to Whistler spreading some western hospitality. I know this will be a trip that I will remember forever.

Congratulations to Alexandre Bilodeau on Canada’s first gold medal on home soil!!! Go Canada Go!!!

Cheers,

Janelle

The Paper Bag Princess

January 28th, 2010 by Janelle Phillips

How would you like to curl up on a mat and read with some children for a day? That is exactly what Katie, Kirstie and I did yesterday. January 27th is Family Literacy Day and to celebrate this occasion we joined the Calgary Reads program and some special guests at Woodland Elementary School. The guests included the Minister of Education Dave Hancock, MLA Dave Rodney, and one of our favorite people, the hilarious Dave Kelly. Besides the “Daves,” there were also many parents and volunteers who had come to celebrate the importance of reading.

The guests of honor for the afternoon were some of the grade 1 and 2 students from the school. I was with two grade 2 students who shared their books with me and impressed me with their reading skills. “The Three Billy Goats Gruff” and “The Paper Bag Princess,”  were the two books that I chose to read to my special listeners. Promoting literacy in the community is very important especially for young children. I felt honored to be able to be part of such an amazing program. I hope that we will participate in one of these events again.

What are your favorite stories?? I’m going to dive into one of my favorites again today…

Yours Truly,

The Paper Bag Princess
