Agrium ag-tivity in the City

Celebrate agriculture at Agrium Ag-tivity in the City, where each day is guaranteed to be a fun and educational experience for the whole family. In partnership with leading industry stakeholders, this area features a celebration of Alberta agriculture. The Agrium Discovery Centre showcases informative industry displays, focusing on food consumption, safety, environment and nutrition, as well as some of the most recent science and technology innovations.

The whole family will appreciate how agriculture makes a difference in our lives and the scope of this industry in Alberta.

Agrium's Seed Survivor

New and improved, this presentation is better than ever with more games, screens and sounds. Team up to try your hand at virtual farming with the Nutrients for Life game, or just crawl through the earthworm tunnel. Agrium has expanded Seed Survivor’s focus so visitors can experience and learn more at this interactive, curriculum based display.

Beef Display

Learn more about this leading Alberta industry. Alberta Beef shares the nutritional value of beef and the environmentally friendly practices of cattle producers and the role they play in sustainable agriculture. You will also be amazed to learn about the many uses of beef by-products, present in different products used everyday. There will be interactive activities, recipes and information on the various cuts of meat.

Chicken Display

This presentation of the Alberta Chicken Producers features a pen of day-old chicks, as well as consumer information and recipes. Chicken producers will be present to answer questions on Alberta’s production of quality chicken. This industry continues to grow and have a significant presence in Alberta’s commerce.

Egg Display

Brought to you by the Alberta Egg Producers, this display will take you through the sights and sounds of an Alberta egg barn. Test your egg grading skills in the egg grading station. Great new recipes will be available.

Canola Display

This presentation by the Alberta Canola Producers Commission and Dow AgroSciences will show you all the benefits of the innovative seed known as canola. While the children roll miniature tractors through the canola seed box, there will be an opportunity to talk with a canola producer. From canola cooking oil to biodiesel this seed has many diverse uses.

Milk Display

Learn where milk comes from and how it is made, and see how milk and dairy products, one of the five food groups, help the body grow strong and healthy. Watch a cow being milked or experience the task of milking for yourself on the life-size mechanical cow. Milk and cookies are offered at a nominal fee.

Swine Display

This display, presented by Alberta Pork and the Calgary Stampede Swine Committee, will show you what the modern day pigpen looks like. You may be surprised to see how clean it is. If you stay long enough you will see how a young litter of piglets gets called to supper, then wrestles to get to the right spot to eat. Swine by-products help provide over 40 different medicines. There is a lot to learn about the many benefits of this Alberta industry.

Bison Display

Learn more about the buffalo/bison industry and how today’s consumer is enjoying this delicious and superbly nutritious red meat. This presentation will feature nutrition facts, recipes and industry information.

Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development Display

The Food Safety Branch of Alberta Agriculture

Alberta is recognized as a world leader in the production of safe food and agriculture products. Staff from the Food Safety Division will be on hand to explain how they work together in the areas of food safety and animal health surveillance. The Food Safety Division works with industry and other partners to assist Alberta’s agrifood industry to continuously improve food safety and the marketability of Alberta’s agrifood products.

Barley Display

Learn more about the world’s most important crop for feeding livestock. Barley is also used as food for people, beverage production, and many industrial applications. Canada is one of the largest barley producers in the world.

Turkey Display

Explore and learn new things about the turkey industry. Alberta turkey producers are some of the most efficient in Canada and they have developed a strong relationship with processors. Gather the most popular turkey recipes and glean a better understanding of the nutritional factors of this white meat.

Olds College

With campuses in Olds and Calgary, Olds College specializes in agriculture, horticulture, land and environmental management, research and applied business. It is our pleasure to showcase our programs at the Calgary Stampede through interactive multi-media presentations and fun activities at our unique barnwood booth.

CropLife Canada Presentation

This display focuses on the benefits, value and safety of plant science technologies and innovations. One can listen to bugs, participate in the Farming Frank Challenge by managing one’s very own farm, and learn about the evolution of food over the past 100 years.

Agrium Barn Tours

Barn tours are presented daily from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. during the Calgary Stampede. Barn tour guides take Stampede visitors through agriculture facilities and Agrium Ag-tivity in the City. These guides provide information about the various livestock and are happy to answer questions that visitors might have. It’s an entertaining and educational anecdotal commentary and a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the agriculture industry in Alberta.

Pigeon Dash for Cash

The pigeons will be racing again from their home in Agrium Ag-tivity in the City. The pigeon loft is home to 60 racing pigeons that started here as young birds in mid-May, where they were just learning to fly. You will understand why they are called homing pigeons when you see them soar and land in their loft. The grand finale, a 100-mile sudden death race, takes place on Sunday, July 13. These amazing racers will compete for a total purse of $3,000.

Heritage Cabin

Our little cabin in Agrium Ag-tivity in the City will give you a feel for the rudimentary conditions that pioneers endured to settle the west. It was a time of hard work, but women found time to use their skills and creative ability to handcraft quilts, weave cloth, spin wool, crochet or make toys. Relive these experiences and see firsthand how these tasks were performed.

Express Cydesdale Hitch

This famous Clydesdale hitch will be housed in Agrium Ag-tivity in the City area. It is an excellent opportunity to see these gentle giants up close. There will be daily demonstrations and the authentic stagecoach will be on display.

Greenhouse Feature

Did you know that the size of the Alberta greenhouse industry is 293 acres? See a working commercial greenhouse next to Agrium Ag-tivity in the City Discovery Centre and learn more about the industry that provides a fresh food source for our eating pleasure.

Portable Biodiesel Plant

Explore this fascinating classroom on wheels providing hands-on learning of biodiesel production and the journey from canola seed to biodiesel fuel.

Stampede Farm Tours

There is even more agriculture to see - take a farm tour as part of your Stampede experience. Offered several times throughout the 10 days (subject to availability), there is a tour that is bound to be of interest to any Stampede visitor or member of the media.
